THE BUDDING TEACHER
THE BUDDING TEACHER
- A Reflection on My Experience as a PHYSICAL SCIENCE TEACHER During Internship
INTRODUCTION
“Teaching is a very noble profession that shapes
the character, caliber, and future of an individual. If the people remember me
as a good teacher, that will be the biggest honor for me.” – Dr. APJ
Abdul Kalam
Above given quote of our late former president clearly and beautifully
depicts the definition of a good teacher.
Teaching is
not an easy job. More than just a profession, it is actually a dedication. A teacher can
remold, reshape and redefine the character of the students whom will form the strong
base of our nation for tomorrow. One book, one pen, one child, and one teacher can change the
world. Teaching
is a noble profession which comes with so much responsibility and duty towards
students. Teachers do not only teach and impart knowledge but inspire and
motivate students for life and take important steps in life. They keep working
to boost the confidence of students and direct them in the right direction.
Taking the role of a Science Teacher is really a challenge because Science teaching is a complex activity that lies at the heart of the vision of science education presented in the Standards. The teaching standards provide criteria for making judgments about progress towards the vision. Science education aims to increase people's understanding of science and the construction of knowledge as well as to promote scientific literacy and responsible citizenship. The aim of science education in school is to develop and sustain the curiosity of young people about the natural world. It seeks to build students’ confidence and ability in scientific enquiry and foster a sense of wonder, enthusiasm and interest in science.
MY EXPERIENCE
About The School
NSS EM HS PERUNNA was established in 1972 and it is managed by the Nair Service Society. This is an Unaided school and English is used as the medium of instruction. It is located in the urban area of Changanacherry of KOTTAYAM district of Kerala. The school consists of Grades from 1 to 10. The school is Co-educational and it have an attached pre-primary section. The school consist of 12 well qualified teaching staff and 3 non teaching staff guided under the leadership of Mrs. Geetha I , the current headmistress of the school. the infrastructure of the school is well maintained and the management tries their best to give all possible learning environment for students to promote active learning.11 teacher trainees including me from various optional subjects in NSS TRAINING COLLEGE, CHANGANACHERRY were assigned in this school for the internship period.
TEACHING EXPERIENCE
According to me , I believe that, choosing this school for my internship was one of the best decisions I ever took in my life. The school headmistress Mrs. Geetha teacher and all other teachers and office staffs supported me and guided me to complete the internship successfully. I was assigned to teach Physics and Chemistry subjects for the students of Std. 9. I took Physics classes for the students of Std. 9-A ,consist of 20 students under the guidance of Mrs. Parvathy S Pillai and Chemistry Classes for the students of Std. 9-B ,consist of 20 students under the guidance of Mrs. Smitha G Nair. I took the chapters 'Current Electricity' & 'Wave Motion ' in Physics and "'Acid- Base - Salts' , ' Non- Metals ' , & ' The world of Carbon ' in Chemistry to teach. Due to Covid-19 pandemic I had to take both online and offline classes periodically as assigned per the school schedule.
Online classes were really different from real class environment. The classes were taken as per special time schedules. According to the given time table offline classes were held from Monday to Wednesday and online classes were taken during Thursday and Friday with 5 periods of 40 mins duration in a day. Special classes were also taken through online live google meet during Saturdays. The timing of offline classes from 9.30 to 1.30. For online class the schedule was designed as 3 periods of 50 mins duration in the morning session from 9am to 1pm and 2 periods of 50 mins duration in the afternoon session from 2pm to 4.30pm. with half 'n' hour interval between the consecutive periods. The medium of teaching was English and online classes were taken through google meet. Most of the students attended the classes and regular attendance was taken. The online platform helped to ease content delivery as power point presentations videos etc. could be shown in between classes which developed interest in students to learn . But teaching mathematical equations derivations and problems was a great challenge through online google meet. Notes with sufficient data and question - answers were also provided regularly after each class. The notes were checked on every Mondays and homework were also checked regularly. By the second week of February I could successfully complete the 50 lesson plans + 2 lesson plans on LAC. The lesson plans were also submitted to the mentor teachers regularly and kept the record of their constant supervision in both online and offline classes.
Offline class experience was really great. Handling different students of different characters at the same time was challenging. Especially this batch of students had some adjustment problems during the beginning of the class since they are coming to the offline class after long two years lock down period. Usage of black board and other audio visual aids in class room helped for effective content delivery. Simple experiments were also demonstrated in the offline class to increase the scientific curiosity of students. Another advantage of offline class was that I could conduct regular inspection and unit tests which helped me as well as students to analyze their level of understanding. Also real class experience helped students to carry out more activities in class which improved their scientific attitude and problem solving skills. After the completion of each chapter I used to conduct unit test for students. I had taken extra time to value those answer sheets and had given special care to those who had scored less. As part of B.Ed. syllabus ACHIEVEMENT TEST and DIAGNOSTIC TEST is also carried out and remedial teaching was also provided. A SELF ASSESSMENT TOOL - RUBRIC was also designed and administrated in the classroom for their self evaluation.
Value Education Class
Education means the holistic development of a person- physical, mental ,emotional, intellectual development. Giving value education for students is essential to inculcate the moral values in students to transform them to live as a responsible social being. Value education also helps the students to become more and more responsible and sensible. It helps them to understand the perspective of life in a better way and lead a successful life as a responsible citizen. It also helps students to develop a strong relationship with family and friends.
I took value education class for the students of class 7. I taught them about 2 values - ' PERSEVERANCE ' and 'ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE'. The classes were taken through online mode in Live Google Meet. Each class was of 30 mins duration. The class made attractive and interesting by including different types of videos and photos related to the values .
Art Education Classes
India's culture is an amalgam of different cultures. The introduction of various art forms, music, paintings and culture of India among students was a great experience as students were really interested to learn about it. Online class is taken to them through google meet portraying the importance of art education in syllabus. It is really a great experience for me as a teacher as well as to students to know more about the rich tradition of our country.
Different activities/ competitions were also organized among students to conscientise national integration, patriotism and universal brotherhood as a part of national integration week celebrations through online platform. Online quiz competition, patriotic song competition, elocution and caption writing competition were conducted and the winners awarded with an e-certificate.
